Telluride Academy Celebrates its Birthday
with a Sheridan Opera House Musical Performance
30th Anniversary Academy Follies
The Telluride Academy invites the entire community to celebrate 30 years of extraordinary outdoor adventures for children and teens on August 5th @ 7pm at the Sheridan Opera House. It’s a musical variety show called the Telluride Academy Follies starring Academy students, staff & parents. The evening begins @ 7pm with complimentary hors’ doeuvres and a cash bar in the Sheridan Opera House Gallery Room accompanied by a silent auction. All auction items are “Personal Service” oriented. Guests can bid on an evening on the town for 6 kids hosted by Luke Brown, the Academy’s Program Director, or a Sheridan Cross Cut hike ending at a hidden cabin on Tomboy road where dinner for 6 will be served. Academy Executive Director Elaine Demas is leading that adventure. How about a week in Tronconces, a beautiful little town on the Pacific coast of Mexico with Academy Founder, Wendy Brooks as your hostess? All of the auction items have been donated by a member of the Academy staff or one of it’s far reaching extended family members.
The 30th Anniversary Follies is sure to bring the house down. The event honors the staff, parents, campers and of, course, Academy founder, Wendy Brooks. Telluride’s own Jeb Berrier and Ashley Boling will emcee the evening. "It’s a unique way to celebrate this milestone. It’s going to be very entertaining and I hope to see the entire community there” said Follies go-go dancer and Academy Executive Director Elaine Demas. “I’m part of a group of four dancers including Amy Peters, who is flying back from Boston to be on the stage with me, Rosie Cusack, who will jump in on any opportunity to get on stage and support the Academy and Jenny Apt, a new Academy parent. Casey McManemin, Rick Silverman, Sue Groner, and many other will also be on stage. All totaled, there will be over 25 performers throughout the night” .The performance is directed by Academy Board member Megan McManemin and her good friend and professional theater director Bob Hess.
All of the proceeds of the evening will go towards the Academy’s 30th Anniversary Pay It Forward Campaign. Demas explains: “For the past 30 years, the Academy has raised money so that every local child who wants to go to camp can do so. We award about $150,000 each year in Tuition Assistance and for 30 years have used “deficit spending” to fund this important need. Historically, we have given the money away in the springtime then spend the rest of the year trying to raise what we have already awarded. After 30 years of his practice, we think it’s time to pay it forward. Our goal is to raise $300,000 this summer to cover not only the 2010 tuition assistance needed, but also to create the fund for 2011. If we can raise the money to pay it forward once, we will spend the next 30 years, a year ahead, not a year behind. We hope the entire community comes out to support our efforts.”
Tickets are $25.00 and include the reception @ 7pm prior to the performance. Tickets can be purchased on the Academy’s website www.tellurideacademy.org or at the door the night of the show.
